What Is a Fractional CRO? (And How to Know You Need One)

A fractional chief revenue officer reviewing a sales pipeline dashboard with a business owner

A fractional CRO is a chief revenue officer who works with your business part-time. Not an hour a month on a call. Not a consultant who drops a deck and disappears. A revenue leader who sits inside your business, runs your pipeline, coaches your team, and owns the number. They just do it for more than one company at a time.

The "fractional" part means you get senior revenue leadership without the full-time salary, the six-month search, and the coin flip on whether the hire works out. You get someone who has done this across dozens of businesses, starting this month, for a fraction of the cost.

What a fractional CRO actually does

The title sounds corporate. The work is not. Here is what a fractional chief revenue officer does week to week:

Notice what is not on that list: advising, recommending, suggesting. A fractional CRO does the work. They do not tell you what you should do and then bill you for the conversation.

What a fractional CRO is not

People confuse this role with three other things:

Three signs you need a fractional CRO

I have worked with over 50 businesses across 9 industries over 15 years. The pattern is always the same. Business owners call when one of three things is true:

1. You still carry the revenue number. You close every big deal yourself. You set the targets. You review the pipeline. You are the sales leader, even though you have a team. This does not scale. Your business grows only as fast as your calendar allows.

2. Sales and marketing run in separate worlds. Marketing generates leads. Sales says the leads are bad. Nobody agrees on what "qualified" means. The handoff is a spreadsheet or a prayer. Revenue leaks out of the gap between the two teams.

3. Next month is a guess. You cannot predict next month's revenue within 20%. Your pipeline is either empty or full of stale deals. Forecasting is a gut feeling, not a process. That means you cannot plan hiring, spending, or growth with any confidence.

If two of those three are true, you have a revenue leadership gap. A fractional CRO closes it.

How GoStartr does it differently

Most fractional CRO providers place one person in your business. That person splits their time, shows up for a few hours a week, and you hope they are enough.

GoStartr places a team. I step in as your CRO: strategy, priorities, working sessions, the decisions that shape revenue direction. A dedicated CSO handles the day-to-day: pipeline management, rep coaching, follow-up accountability, the work that keeps deals moving between our sessions.

Month to month. No contract lock-in. You stay because the numbers work, not because a piece of paper says you have to.

Real results

Across 50+ businesses and 15 years of leading revenue teams:

These are real businesses with real numbers. The case studies are on the GoStartr homepage. Results vary by business, market, and team. That disclaimer is real.

Is it right for your business?

A fractional CRO makes sense when:

It does not make sense when you have 20+ reps and need a full-time executive in the building every day. At that scale, a full-time hire is the right move.
