Your Reps Make the Same Mistake Every Week

A sales manager and a young salesperson, each with one earbud in, sit at a laptop reviewing a recorded call while she pauses it to make a point

You heard it again on Thursday. Your rep got a price question and dropped the price before the buyer even pushed. You've heard him do it before. You meant to say something. Then the day got busy.

Without a manager, mistakes turn into habits. Nobody listens to the calls, so nobody catches the moment it goes wrong. The rep thinks the call went fine. You think he should know better by now. Nothing changes.

What it costs you

One small mistake repeated on every call adds up. A rep who discounts too early gives away margin on every deal. A rep who never asks who signs loses deals to a decision maker he never met. You won't see it in a single call. You see it over a year.

How the coaching loop works

Coaching isn't a training day once a year. It's a short loop, run every week, on real calls.

  1. Listen to real calls. Pick two or three recent calls per rep, and make sure at least one was lost. You learn more from a lost call than a won one.
  2. Pick one thing. Not a list of ten. The single change that would make the biggest difference on the next call. Usually it's one moment: the opener, the price question, or the ask.
  3. Practise it. Role play that exact moment using the buyer's real objection. Five minutes, out loud, until the new answer feels normal.
  4. Check it next week. Listen for that moment on the next calls. If it stuck, move on. If not, practise again.

The rep owns the change. The manager makes sure it actually happens.

I worked with a remote US team of three reps where this loop was the whole plan. One fix at a time, checked every week. After eight weeks, all three were hitting target, and they held it the month after. Every team is different, but the loop works the same way everywhere.

What good looks like

You stop hearing the same mistake. Reps start pointing out their own weak moments before you do. Calls get a little longer and a little calmer, because the rep is asking questions instead of rushing to the price.
